Abstract
A study of the recent patterns of intestinal helminth infections among residents in Ulju county, Kyungnam Province, based on the discovery of eggs by formalin-ether sedimentation technique, has been carried out during the period from June, 1979 to March, 1981.
Of total of 2,016 individuals examine, one or more species of intestinal parasite were found in 1, 209, an overall positive rate of 60.0 per cent,
Of these, Trichuris trichiura was the most common- helminth, beingfound in 35.8 per cent, ;followed by Ascaris lumbricoides 19.7 per cent and Clonorchis sinensis 18.7per cent.
Sex-specific rate of the soil-transmitted helminths, Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, hookworm and Trichostrongylus species, showed higher in females than in males.
By contrast, Clonorchis sinensis and Metagonimus yokogawai were higher in males than in females.
The age-specific rate of Trichuris trichiura showed that the highest prevalence was observed in the 40-49 year age group and the lowest was from 30 to 39 year age group.
In Clonorchis sinensis infections, the rate tended to be higher with the increase of age and reached a maximum of 41.2 per cent in the 40-49 year age group.
